exactly.. my IT guy was telling me that he thinks one of the network mapping
policies seems to be resetting itself constantly.. sounds weird enough, and
likely enough.. we've tried everything else

It may not be the drive. It may be something like the connections to the
server are being dropped when inactive and then woken up again. ISTR
someone talking about "keeo connections alive" in the settings. This was
probably set correctly before the change but Windows has a bad habit of
reconfiguring itelf when something hardware has changed.
