just an FYI.. it's the lock file itself causing the problem, not the
process.. explorer allows me to actually see the lock file appear and
freeze, then I can have other processes fail with the same error, until
the lock file is deleted
still, can't make it originally happen anywhere except the one dial-in,
in the one process
