or I could learn to close tabs I'm not using, more often :-)

every time I click on something, and the laptop starts thrashing its' way to 
that, I look and see that I've got 8 or 10 tabs open.. the cache is 
completely used up.. there are 15,000 to 20,000 file handles.. all stuff 
that I haven't used for several hours.. all stuff that I'm done with and/or 
that'll have to be refreshed anyhow

FYI you can turn that off.  It will actually open commonly used pages on
other threads.  So you can have one tab open and 5-6 instances running.
